It really should go without saying that businesses must be doing their utmost at all times to keep employees safe. Nobody wants to work for a company that is lax about safety or security, after all.

However, for the purposes of this article, we’re going to look solely at some key facts, statistics and figures that showcase how a sound approach to health and safety and employee protection can improve the overall workplace experience, and can subsequently bring about significant business benefits.

The vast majority of people spend huge portions of their lives in the work environment – with some spending as much as 40 per cent of the week participating in employment-based activities – and so it makes sense that, should health and safety be prioritised, people’s lives will enhance and business productivity will subsequently improve.

A study released by the Global Wellness Institute in 2016 and updated in 2018 (GWL, 2018) found that four in five company bosses believe that dedicated workplace wellness programs can drastically enhance productivity, while a separate study by the same organisation discovered that when employees don’t feel that wellness is a focus in the workplace, they are likely to be significantly impacted. The survey found that, in companies without wellness programs, 6 in 10 employees struggle to get work finished on time, be engaged by their work and remain motivated.

The same study also found that 69 per cent of employees said work has the capacity to impact their mental and emotional wellbeing. Half said that their workplace actively impacted their physical health while two-thirds said their workplace had a ‘significant’ impact on their overall levels of happiness.

Simply focusing on wellness, and ensuring that employees are given exactly what they need to succeed at work while also remaining healthy, can have a huge impact on overall business productivity and employee contentment.

Research has found that if companies do not have an established wellbeing program, productivity is liable to reduce by as much as 17.5 per cent (GWL, 2018). What’s more, more than half (59 per cent) of firms believe that prioritising wellness – be it via investing in specific technologies, classes or equipment – can reduce overall business costs, while more than two-thirds of business owners (67 per cent) are confident that integrated workplace wellness programs lead to employees being ‘significantly’ happier while at work.

Research has also found that wellness is not only intrinsically linked to productivity, loyalty and staff retention (Optum, 2018), but can result in fewer workplace injuries, a reduction in the number of employees that will ultimately develop musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), and can also vastly minimise the chance of developing chronic illnesses such as diabetes (type 2) and cardiovascular disease (Unify, 2019).
